Bridgewatch Podcast

The Marine Innovation for Marine Industry Professionals

Welcome to BridgeWatch, a podcast that dives into how remarkable vessels of war, commerce, and travel are built and maintained using the latest technologies.

Your hosts, Winston Pynn and William Champagne, cover shipbuilding challenges and introduce unconventional methods for success. Plus, you’ll hear from industry leaders who share their best practices for building better ships faster.

The ship is leaving soon, jump onboard!

William Champagne is a territory sales representative at InnovMarine who partners with naval architects, engineers, and ship owners to identify software solutions to streamline shipbuilding  from design and build, to maintenance and repair. For William, it’s especially gratifying to be onsite with clients as they integrate the latest software into their ship construction plans, whether it’s for Search and Rescue Lifeboats or Littoral Combat Ships.

William grew up watching vessels sail the St. Lawrence Seaway. He is fascinated with history and is the first to inform people that in 1809 the first steamship in North America was launched by fellow Quebecer, John Molson.

With a strong commitment to advancing the shipbuilding industry, William founded Quebec’s student section for the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) and now serves as membership coordinator. He also co-hosts Bridgewatch: The Marine Innovation Podcast. As John Molson once said, “We are all members of a larger community which depends on everyone playing a part.”

William has a diploma in Naval Architecture from the Institut Maritime du Québec (IMQ) where he won the people’s choice for best conceptual design of a fire boat for the city of Montréal. He also has a Marketing Certificate from the Université du Québec at Rimouski.

When he isn’t running along the St. Lawrence River, training for a marathon, William likes to spend his spare time going to NFL games and fishing on the lac des Deux-Montagnes.

Winston Pynn is a naval architect and marine business consultant at InnovMarine. He is a subject matter expert on integrating design and engineering tools, including using virtual reality in complex ships models. His proudest moments are when shipbuilders gain a competitive advantage, such as a 30 to 1 time savings, by optimizing their design and build processes.

Growing up on an island and inspired by his grandfather, a WWII marine engineer, Winston is captivated by ships. This fascination has led to a 15-year career designing vessels and serving in many roles of increasing responsibility, most notably as senior naval architect and engineering manager at VT Halter in New Orleans and as general manager at a shipyard start-up in Vancouver, Canada.

Having worked with shipbuilders across Europe, Asia and North America, Winston brings a global perspective as co-host of Bridgewatch: The Marine Innovation Podcast. He has published and presented as numerous conferences, including a paper on Minimising the Designer / End User Knowledge Gap Using Virtual Reality at the International Conference on Computer Applications in Shipbuilding in Singapore.

Winston is a graduate of the Marine Institute at Memorial University and has an MBA from the University of Warwick (UK). In 2006 he became a faculty member of the School of Maritime Studies teaching naval architecture at the Marine Institute of Memorial University.

Winston lives in St. John’s, Newfoundland where he enjoys spending time with his family, cats and a stubborn Airedale named Gromit. His little spare time is spent working on his too old convertible, gaming, and rehearsing and gigging with his rock band of middle-aged dads.
